The Tai Chi Form

To make the form easier to learn I have split it into six sections. The first, second and last sections are all available in the basic membership. The more challenging third, fourth and fifth sections are all available just of intermediate membership as is the course showing the whole form put together. I will shortly be creating a course showing some of the variations you can use in some of the key movements.

Practice over and over again. Not just until you think you have them right but constant practice. This is the path to gradually mastering your mind, body, balance, energy and breathing. Learning them by heart is not enough by a very long way.

Form Section One. Basic level
This very important course takes you through some of the basic skills you need to know before you can do the form. It also covers some of the principles of movement and power you need to understand. The movements in the first section are repeated several times throughout the rest of the form. They are like the chorus of a song so need to be learned thoroughly.

Form Section Two. Basic level.
This course reiterates the important principles. The section contains several movements many of which are repeated towards the end of the form.

Form Section Three. Intermediate level.
This section introduces you to two of the important arm circles. All the circles are gone over in a separate course. The movements of this section are easy to learn as there are only four of them but as always the devil is in the details.

Form Section Four. Intermediate level.
This is perhaps the most challenging of the sections as you need to master standing on one leg. So the course teaches you the tips and tricks to doing just that. It all lies in an understanding of yin and yang which is what tai chi chuan is all about.

Form Section Five. Intermediate level.
This section contains only one new movement but it is the longest single move in the whole form and contains some challenging and confusing footwork. Get your feet right first before you add the arms.

Form Section Six. Basic level
Most of what happens in this final section is moves you have done before. There is one challenging 360 degree turn but the rest of it should be manageable if you have got this far.

Videos of the whole form. Intermediate level.
You should have discovered by now that there is not one way to do the form but an infinite number of variations. It’s like painting a tree. There is no set way to do it and ignore anyone who tries to tell you your way is wrong. If it follows the principles of tai chi and has a set purpose why you have done it that way then it is right for you at that time.

Arm Circles for Kung Fu and Tai Chi. Basic level
These circular patterns are essential training for all the arts I teach. They give fluid power to the arms and shoulders and teach you to connect your body together for whole-body power.

Other Courses

I am creating a range of other courses in tai chi, kung fu, stress, breathing and more. Watch this space.

Kung Fu Basic Skills. Basic level
This course takes you through essential training in stances, arm circles, kicks, strikes, tactics and more. It’s a work in progress and more lessons will be added in due course.

Bagua Basics Circle Walking. Intermediate level
Baguazhang is a sister art to tai chi and a fascinating art to learn. There are no long, complicated forms to learn instead the focus is on the ancient practice of walking in a circle.
